The chemical element that has atomic number 82 and is in group IV of the main subgroup of the periodic system is lead .
Its simple substance is a malleable, relatively fusible metal of silver-white color with a bluish tint. Lead does not occur in its pure form in nature. It is always mixed with some metal, most commonly tin and antimony .
Application area
Due to its ductility, lead is used in the engineering industry for the manufacture of various alloys with other metals .
Lead is used in the electrical industry, especially for the manufacture of batteries and cable cabins, because. it is resistant to air, water and various acids .
Used to protect patients from X-ray radiation .
Lead compounds are widely used :
- Nitrogen-containing lead compounds are used as explosives. Lead nitrate (Pb(NO 3 ) 2 ) is used for the production of powerful mixed explosives, as well as in match production. PbN 6 - as the most widely used detonator .
- Lead perchlorate (Pb (ClO 4 ) 2 ) is used to prepare a heavy liquid, which is used in the flotation beneficiation of ores, sometimes used as an oxidizing agent .
- Lead dioxide PbO 2 is widely used for the manufacture of lead batteries, and many backup chemical current sources are also produced on its basis .
- Lead chloride PbCl 2 is used to prepare ointments for the treatment of tumors .
- Lead chromate PbCrO 4 (chrome yellow dye) is used mainly as yellow pigments for the preparation of paints, for dyeing porcelain and fabrics .
