Zinc is at atomic number 30 in D.I. Mendeleev. It is an element of group II of the secondary subgroup .
A simple substance is a fairly ductile silver-white transition metal. Under normal conditions, it is brittle, and tarnishes in air (covered with a thin layer of zinc oxide ZnO) .
Application area
In its pure form, the metal is used to restore precious metals (gold, silver) .
It is used to protect steel and cast iron from corrosion (galvanizing) .
Because zinc in a series of voltages is the most electropositive metal that is stable in aqueous solutions, so it is used in the manufacture of a variety of chemical current sources (batteries) .
Zinc is also used in the manufacture of paint (zinc white) .
Telluride, selenide, phosphide, zinc sulfide are widely used as semiconductors .
Zinc dust is used in pyrotechnics to produce blue colored flames. It is also used in the production of rare and precious metals .
Zinc selenide is used to make optical glasses with very low mid-infrared absorption .
