This compound is a sintering product of lithium and cobalt nitrates (process temperature 400-700°C). It is a crystalline dark gray substance with several modifications. Lithium cobalt oxide is insoluble in water .
It is used in the manufacture of lithium-ion electric batteries using a positive electrode of lithium cobaltite, which are then used in portable electronics .
