To control the chemical composition of the weld of steels of various grades, certain welding fluxes are combined with specially selected slags and electrode wires.
Designation: Flux brand "AN" stands for "Academy of Sciences" and indicates the developer - IES them. E. O. Paton, the numbers after AN are the flux number, and the letters after the number indicate the fractional composition: “A” - large granulation, “Sh” - small (traditional name according to the type of welding machine that is outdated today).
Welding fluxes AH are produced in accordance with GOST-9087-81. The production of fused fluxes consists in the fusion of its components (manganese ore, quartz sand, magnesite, fluorspar, etc.). The flux melt is granulated in water or crushed until a uniform grain size of a given fractional composition is obtained. A grain size of 0.25…1.6 mm corresponds to a welding wire with a cross section of 3 mm, a grain size of 0.35…3 mm corresponds to a wire with a cross section of more than 3 mm. Finer grain is obtained by crushing the casting - dry granulation.

Where is it applied?
- Welding fluxes by purpose are divided into three main categories:
- for alloyed and carbon steels, for high-alloyed steels and for non-ferrous metal alloys.
- According to chem. In terms of composition, welding fluxes are divided into high-silicon and low-silicon, manganese-free and manganese.
- According to the type of grain, vitreous (transparent) and pumiceous (porous) are distinguished. Vitreous welding fluxes are more widely used.
- Electroslag welding uses both general-purpose fluxes (AN-22, AN-348A, ANF-5, 48-OF-6) and special-purpose fluxes (AN-8, AN-25). These fluxes contain titanium oxide, which gives them high electrical conductivity in the solid state. In automatic surfacing of steels, the same fluxes are used that are used for welding a particular steel grade, and alloyed wire.
