Dicyandiamide or N-cyanoguanidine is a colorless crystalline substance, odorless and bitter in taste. DCD is readily soluble in warm ether, hot water, partially soluble in cool water, slightly better in liquid ammonia and alcohol, incapable of solubility in chilled ether and benzene. The density of N-cyanoguanidine is 1.405 g/cm³, melting occurs at a temperature of 209°C.
Dicyandiamide is part of the wastewater of enterprises producing plastics, melamine, adhesives, and medical supplies. Industrial production of DCD is based on the action of calcium cyanamide with acetic acid or heating of cyanamide until melting, accompanied by its dimerization.

- In the production of plastics, varnishes, melanin, dicyanformaldehyde and epoxy resins, cyanide compounds, fabrics, hydrazine salts;
- For the manufacture of fibreboard, protected from fire and biological factors;
- For the production of fire impregnation of wood products, synthetic tanning agents;
- In pharmacology, in the manufacture of a number of medicines, in particular, luminal;
- As an integral component of nitroguanidines used as explosives.
