Potassium dichromate is an orange crystalline substance, highly soluble in water. Its aqueous solutions are characterized by an acidic reaction. Potassium chromium peak is a powerful oxidizing agent, it is a highly toxic and carcinogenic substance. When drops of its solution enter the body, damage and destruction of the skin, cartilage tissues and respiratory tract occurs.
The density of potassium dichromate is 2.676 g / cm³ , melting occurs at a temperature of 398 ° C, boiling - at 500 ° C. To obtain potassium dichromate, an exchange reaction is made between potassium chloride and sodium dichromate. Also used is the heating of a mixture of potassium carbonate with an alloy of (Cr 2 Fe)O 4 to a temperature of 1000-1300°C, followed by leaching of the resulting melt with water in a cooled state. A potassium chromium peak can also be obtained by evaporating an aqueous solution of an equimolar mixture of potassium carbonate and chromium oxide.
The chemical formula is K 2 Cr 2 O 7 .
