Amyl alcohol is a yellowish liquid with an irritating "fusel" odor. One of the ways to obtain amyl alcohol is the distillation of fusel oils.
Boiling point 90-135°. Dissolves many resins and improves varnish flow. Density 814 kg/m3.
Amyl alcohol has a good stabilizing effect.
Amyl alcohol C 5 H 11 OH . 1-pentanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol and 2-methyl-2-butanol are well soluble in water. Other isomers of amyl alcohol dissolve much worse in water. Solvent for paints and varnishes, extractant, component of pear essence. The name "amyl alcohol" refers to the normal (straight) form, 1-pentanol.
-Used as solvents, for oils, resins, fats, waxes.
-esters of amyl alcohols are solvents and plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride and cellulose acetate.
They are used as fragrances in perfumery
- in cooking (added as a fructose essence)
