Calcium formate (calcium formate) is the calcium salt of formic acid. In nature, it is extremely rare in some minerals. Calcium formate is obtained by the action of formic acid on calcium, its oxide and carbonate (chalk or marble), as well as by high-temperature dissolution of carbon monoxide in solid calcium hydroxide. Calcium formate is a strong hydrophile, which allows it to be used as a dewatering agent. Hydrolyzed, which is why it has an alkaline reaction. Reacts with acids stronger than formic acid to form the corresponding calcium and formic acid salts. It is an antiseptic. Due to its high hydrophilicity, pure calcium formate is used as a hardening accelerator for building mixtures and concrete, as well as an anti-frost additive in concrete. Also, the use of calcium formate as a component of concrete in the amount of two to four percent by weight increases the compressive strength of concrete. In Ukraine, it was used (not allowed) as a salt and preservative in soft drinks, but the amount should not exceed 210 mg per liter (combined with formic acid or another type of acid, but not more than 360 mg per liter). Calcium formate is used in fermentation of various vegetables (especially cabbage), but not for canning, but in order to be a plant tissue compactor.
