Tolyltriazole or methylbenzotriazole is a white, light yellow or cream-colored substance in the form of a powder or granules, slightly soluble in water and highly soluble in organic solvents - alcohol, chloroform, toluene, benzene and dilute alkalis. It contains 4- and 5-tolyltriazoles. The density of methylbenzotriazole is 1.24 g / cm³ , melting occurs at a temperature of 80 ° C, decomposition - at 160 ° C.
The production of tolyltriazole is based on the action of sodium metal on tosylosazones of dimethyl-glyoxal placed in ethylene glycol. The use of the substance is due to its ability to inhibit the corrosion of such metals as silver, lead, nickel, brass, zinc, bronze, complex metal systems, to prevent the corrosion of copper and its alloys.
