Sodium sulfide or sodium sulphide is a crystalline substance with a pronounced hygroscopicity, colorless or with a slight color, readily soluble in ethanol and water. It is characterized by the formation of crystalline hydrates, a highly alkaline environment of solutions. Sodium sulfide refers to anoxic salts, has a high photosensitivity, its oxidation in air is slow. When melting, the substance does not decompose, it is resistant to high temperatures.
Sodium sulfide is a reducing agent, attaches sulfur atoms, participates in ion exchange reactions. Its density is 1.856 g/cm³ and melts at 1176°C. To obtain sodium sulfides, the method of reducing anhydrous sodium sulfide with coal is used. The mixture is placed in rotary shaft kilns, the temperature values of which reach 800-1000°C.
Technical sodium sulfide in Ukraine is produced as a bulk product (in granular or flaked form) or as a monolith.
There are 3 brands of this substance in a monolithic form:
- grade A - used for the manufacture of dyes, the production of light skins, export deliveries;
- B - in demand at textile and leather enterprises;
- B - used in the production of non-ferrous metals.
The chemical formula is Na 2 S•nH 2 O, the value of n ranges from 1.9 to 2.4.

Technical sodium sulfide is an explosion and fireproof substance, included in hazard class II, its MPC in workplace air is 0.2 mg/m³. Products are packed using special steel drums, containers SK-1-5 or soft disposable, multilayer paper bags protected from moisture by bituminous rubber or polyethylene layer. The mass of bags does not exceed 50 kg.
Sodium sulphide should be stored in closed warehouses in its original packaging or in tightly closed containers for 1 year from the date of manufacture. Container platforms are used for storage of soft containers.
