It has been produced on an industrial scale since 1950 by the method of chemical electrooxidation. Saccharin is about 300-500 times sweeter than sugar. In 1977, it was recognized as a carcinogen, which was not subsequently confirmed, and at present (since 1991) its safety has been confirmed by the European Commission Directive on sweeteners, subject to the permissible daily allowance - no more than 5 mg / 1 kg of human weight. Ortho-sulfobenzimide is approved in more than 90 countries as a safe product for health. Safety and quality requirements are set out in the Specification for Food Contaminants (FAO/WHO).
Approved for use by people suffering from diabetes as a surrogate sugar substitute. As a food additive, E954 is widely used in the production of food and non-alcoholic beverages: bakery and confectionery products, ice cream and dairy products, instant concentrates (soups, cereals, breakfasts), carbonated drinks and instant (dry) juices, chewing gums. As a dietary supplement in tablet and powder form, saccharin is approved for retail sale.
