In an inert atmosphere, silicon carbide decomposes only at very high temperatures.

Begins to decompose into elements at temperatures above 1000°C. Silicon carbide is the only binary compound formed by the elements of Group IV of the Periodic Table of Elements of D. I. Mendeleev. Silicon carbide refers to covalent crystals. The share of the ionic bond due to some difference in the electronegativity of the Si and C atoms does not exceed 10-12%.
