Ceresin is a waxy substance from white to brown, tasteless and odorless, slightly oily to the touch. It is readily soluble in benzene, insoluble in water and ethanol, limited in mineral oils. It is purified ozocerite (a mineral from the group of petroleum bitumens).
Compared to paraffin, it has less chemical resistance, as well as greater viscosity and the ability to thicken oils, which is due to its fine crystalline structure. The disadvantages of ceresin include its relatively low strength and hardness, low ductility, and significant linear shrinkage (up to 3.5%).
Density: 910-940 kg/m³, melting point: 65 to 88° C, boiling point over 400° C.
It consists mainly of weakly branched isoalkanes, a small amount of normal alkanes, naphthenes with a long side chain.
The chemical formula is from C 37 H 76 to C 53 H 108 .
