Lanolin is an animal (wool) wax that is obtained by digesting sheep's wool. Outwardly, it is a thick, viscous yellow or brownish-yellow mass with a peculiar smell.
Lanolin is insoluble in water, but readily soluble in acetone, chloroform and ether. It can form a stable emulsion. The melting point of lanolin is 36 - 42 °C.
Lanolin is used in many industries due to the fact that it is difficult to saponify, is well absorbed into the skin and is resistant to oxidation by oxygen.

Scope of application:

  • in the production of concrete, lubricants, means for protecting clothes from dirt and water;
  • in the food industry (used as a food additive E913);
  • in cosmetology (included in skin creams, lipsticks as a skin softener and moisturizer);
  • in medicine (used as the basis for adhesive bandages, therapeutic plasters and hydrophilic ointments, which helps to heal wounds and restore the integrity of the skin).

Lanolin is not at all dangerous to humans, however, hypersensitivity is possible on an individual basis.
