Calcium carbide is the name of the inorganic compound of calcium with carbon. It looks like solid crystals of dark shades with a density of 2.22 g / cm 3 . Obtained from a mixed composition of coke and calcium oxide by calcination at a temperature of 1900°C, while the melting point is 2160°C. The chemical formula is SaS 2 . Specifications are determined by GOST 1460-81.
Carbonaceous calcium strongly absorbs water. When providing high thermal conditions, it reacts with chlorine, arsenic, phosphorus. Does not react with solvents. Not flying.
Belongs to the first class of danger. When exposed to water and oxidizing agents, it releases acetylene, which is flammable and explosive. In addition, it is a gas of narcotic action, which is lighter than air, and consequently accumulates under the ceiling. The maximum allowable dose of acetylene in the air is 1 mg/m 3 . Calcium carbide dust irritates the mucous membrane and human skin. Work rooms are provided with ventilation.
The chemical formula is CaC 2 .
