Carbamide (urea) - chemical compound, diamide carbonic acid .
Looks like white crystals. Without smell. They dissolve well in polar solvents ( water , ethanol , liquid ammonia ). As the polarity of the solvent decreases, the solubility decreases. Carbamide is insoluble in non-polar solvents ( alkanes , chloroform ).
Reactivity of carbamide: both nitrogen atoms are nucleophiles , that is, carbamide forms salts with strong acids, nitration to form N-nitroureas, halogenated to form N-halogen derivatives. Carbamide is alkylated, forming the corresponding N-alkylureas RNHCONH 2 , interacts with aldehydes , forming derivatives of 1-amino alcohols RC(OH)NHCONH 2 ,
Under harsh conditions, carbamide is acylated by carboxylic acid chlorides to form ureides (N-acylureas).
In the industrial sphere, urea is synthesized by the Bazarov reaction from ammonia and carbon dioxide at a temperature of 130-140°C and a pressure of 200 atm.
Application:
In the industrial sector, carbamide is added in the preparation of resins and adhesives.
In animal husbandry, it is widely used as a feed additive.
In agriculture, urea is used as a fertilizer.
