Iron vitriol is an inorganic compound, the iron salt of sulfuric acid with the formula FeSO 4. Non-volatile, odorless. The anhydrous substance is colorless, opaque, very hygroscopic. Crystalline hydrates - hygroscopic transparent crystals of light bluish-green, tetrahydrate FeSO 4 · 4H 2 O green (rosenite), monohydrate FeSO 4 · H 2 O colorless (tar kit). The taste is strongly astringent, ferruginous (metallic). In the air they gradually disappear (lose water of crystallization). Iron(II) sulfate is highly soluble in water (26.3 g at 20°C). A bluish-green FeSO 4 7H 2 O heptahydrate crystallizes from aqueous solutions, which bears the trivial name of iron vitriol. The toxicity of iron sulphate is relatively low.
