Technical fibrous cellulose is an integral part of plant cells, a carbohydrate, a polysaccharide with a complex molecular and supramolecular structure, a biopolymer, a white solid fibrous substance, insoluble in water.
Cellulose and starch have the same chemical formula. Substances differ in molecular structure.
Cellulose is a product of processing a self-replenishing resource: vegetable raw materials of deciduous and coniferous trees, cotton, straw, kenaf, reed, etc. and secondary raw materials of waste paper and rags of natural fabrics. In the first case, cellulose fibers are called primary, in the second, secondary. Cellulosic fibers are obtained from mechanically processed vegetable raw materials by the method of sulfite and alkaline pulping in order to split the plant tissue with the removal of non-cellulose components: lingin, proteins, fats, resins, waxes, etc. From waste paper and rags, recycled fiber is obtained by dry dissolution.
