Name Tungsten / Wolframium
CAS number 7440-33-7
Chemical formula W

Tungsten is a chemical element of group VI of the secondary subgroup with atomic number 74. The name Wolframium was transferred to an element from the mineral wolframite called lat. Spuma lupi (“wolf foam”) or German Wolf Rahm (“wolf cream”, “wolf cream”). Under normal conditions, it is a hard, shiny, silver-gray transition metal.

Tungsten is the most refractory of metals. Under standard conditions, chemically resistant.

Application area

Tungsten is used for the manufacture of filaments, X-ray tubes, heaters, vacuum furnace screens, which are designed for use in high-temperature conditions .

Steel alloyed with tungsten has high strength properties. The advantage of these compounds is resistance to abrasion, the unlikely occurrence of cracks during operation. Products from these types of alloy are used for the manufacture of tools for a wide range of purposes: medicine, well drilling, products for processing materials in mechanical engineering (cutting inserts, as in the photo above). The most famous steel grade in construction using tungsten is called “pobedit”.

In the chemical industry, paints, catalysts, and pigments are made from tungsten .

Tungsten is used for coating materials, forming a protective film, which makes it possible to work at high temperatures in reducing and neutral environments .

Also known rods used in arc welding. Because tungsten is a refractory metal, it is used with filler wires when performing welding .
