Urotropine, also called hexamethylenetetramine, is a white crystalline powder with a bittersweet taste and is odorless. Soluble in alcohol, water, methanol, chloroform, acetone. Does not dissolve in ether, evaporates when heated without melting. When burned, it forms a pale flame. An aqueous solution of hexamine has an alkaline reaction. Once in an acidic environment, the substance breaks down with the release of formaldehyde.
The density of urotropine is 1.27 g/cm³, melting occurs at 263°C, decomposition occurs at 280°C. The production of urotropine is based on its isolation from formaldehyde by the method of exposure to ammonia, followed by centrifugation, drying and stabilization.

Where is it applied?

Methenamine is a flammable substance belonging to the 3rd hazard class. Upon contact with human skin, it causes irritation, sometimes eczema and severe itching. Work with urotropin should be in overalls, using personal protective equipment, lubricating the skin with a special ointment. The concentration of the substance in the air at the workplace should not exceed 9 mg/m³. When working, precautions must be taken, since the settling dust can ignite, and if it is in high concentration in the air, an explosion can occur. Workplaces should be equipped with local and supply and exhaust ventilation.
