Urotropin has the appearance of a white hygroscopic crystalline powder or colorless, odorless, shiny crystals with a sweetish-bitter taste. The substance is sparingly soluble in water and chloroform, less soluble in some organic solvents such as benzene, acetone and carbon tetrachloride.
The use of urotropin:
- In medicine. Included in the composition of drugs as an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent;
- For the production of phenol-formaldehyde resins;
- For the production of explosives;
- Included in buffer solutions (analytical chemistry);
- As a corrosion inhibitor;
- as a fuel;
- As a food additive (E239).
