Titanium

The chemical element of group VI of the side subgroup with atomic number 22 is titanium. It is in 10th place in terms of prevalence in nature.

The simple substance titanium has the appearance of a light, durable metal of a silvery-white color. Titanium exists in two crystalline modifications: α-Ti, β-Ti, the temperature of polymorphic transformation α↔β is 883°C. Titanium has a Brinell hardness of 175 MPa.

Resistant to corrosion due to the oxide film, but when crushed into powder, as well as in thin chips or wire, titanium is pyrophoric.

Application area

Titanium alloys are widely used as structural materials in aircraft and rocket building, and shipbuilding.

Titanium is used in the chemical industry (reactors, pipeline equipment, pumps). In addition, it is also used in other industries: military, automotive, food (titanium dioxide (TiO ₂ ) - food additive E171), agricultural.

This metal has found its application in medicine. It is used in the manufacture of prostheses, in dental and endodontic instruments, dental implants.

It is also used in jewelry, mobile technology, sporting goods, etc.

Titanium carbide, titanium diboride, titanium carbonitride are important components of superhard materials for metal processing.

Titanium nitride is used to coat tools, church domes and in the manufacture of costume jewelry, as it has a color similar to gold.
