It is light yellow crystals that are soluble in water. The salt forms a crystalline hydrate of the composition Sm 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·8H 2 O. When heated, the sulfate decomposes. May react with alkalis .
It is used in glasses that absorb IR radiation and are able to luminesce. In addition, it is used as a chemical reagent and to produce samarium metal .
