Sodium sulfate or sodium sulfate is a substance in the form of colorless crystals or white powder (a grayish tint is possible). Natural deposits of anhydrous sodium sulfate are the mineral thenardite, with water it forms mirabilite crystalline hydrate, also known as Glauber's salt. It dissolves in water, is characterized by weak hygroscopicity, and caking is not characteristic of it. At temperatures below 32 ° C, crystallization of sodium sulfate occurs, at higher temperatures it stably retains an anhydrous form.
The production of sodium sulfate is based on several methods:
- On the reaction of sulfuric acid and caustic soda or sodium salts in a "sulfate" furnace, the temperature of which is maintained at 500-550°C to obtain additional hydrogen chloride.
- Obtaining from natural raw materials.
- In the manufacture of chrompike as a waste.
There are two grades of sodium sulfate: A (industrial production method), B (extraction of natural deposits). Grade A additionally includes three grades (highest, first, second), the first two grades are used in many industries, the second grade A and grade B are used only in glass production.
The chemical formula is CaCl(OCl).
