Anhydrous copper sulfate is a colorless, opaque crystalline substance. It dissolves well in water. Forms crystalline hydrates. The most famous crystalline hydrate is copper sulfate 5-hydrate, or blue vitriol .
It is used as a feedstock for the production of other copper compounds. Also, anhydrous sulfate is a good desiccant and can be used for dehydrating ethanol, drying gases (including air) and as a humidity indicator .
