Cobalt sulfate is a pink crystalline substance (anhydrous). Let's well dissolve in water. It has two crystal modifications :

  • α- CoSO 4 pink;
  • β- CoSO 4 lilac .

In nature, it occurs as the minerals applouite, murhausite, and biberite. Forms several crystalline hydrates :

Heptahydrate (CoSO 4 •7 H 2 O ) - red crystals .

Hexahydrate (CoSO 4 •6 H 2 O ) - orange-red crystals .

Monohydrate (CoSO 4 H 2 O ) - pink crystals .

Cobalt(II) sulfate hydrate is used in the preparation of pigments, as well as in the manufacture of other cobalt salts. Cobalt pigment is used to color porcelain and glass. Cobalt(II) sulfate is used in batteries and electroplating baths, sympathetic inks, and as an additive to soils and animal feeds .
