It looks like a white powder. soluble in a hot solution of concentrated sulfuric acid. It is a crystalline substance, almost insoluble in water, as well as other solvents, alkalis and most acids. Soluble in chlorine water, hydrobromic, hydroiodic acids, solutions of alkali metal bicarbonates.
It is obtained by the interaction of soluble salts, oxide, peroxide, barium hydroxide with sulfuric acid or soluble sulfates.
Precipitated barium sulfate absorbs x-rays well. Due to its properties, it is able to give materials a high density and a flat surface. It is widely used in the production of paints and varnishes, plastics, rubber, pharmaceuticals, as well as the food industry.
