Aluminum sulfate is a complex hygroscopic inorganic compound that has the form of colorless crystals, plates or powder.
Solubility:
  • in water - good;
  • in alcohols - bad.
Can form crystalline hydrates. Common Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·18H 2 O, which has the form of transparent colorless crystals. During thermal heating, it evaporates water without melting; during high-temperature calcination, it decomposes into Al 2 O 3 and SO 3 .
Application:
  • purification of industrial waters, as well as water for household and drinking purposes;
  • dyeing fabrics and tanning leather;
  • as a waterproofing agent in construction;
  • as a fertilizer;
  • is part of household chemicals;
  • is a component of medicines that are used for pest bites.
It can also be used as a food additive E-520, which serves as an emulsifier.
Aluminum sulfate is mostly harmless to the human body. But working with it requires the use of protective equipment (gloves, goggles, a respirator), as well as with strict observance of all safety precautions for working with chemicals.
