Silver

Silver is in group I of the secondary subgroup of the periodic system under the atomic number 47 .

A simple substance is a rather heavy, malleable, ductile silver-white noble metal. Thin silver foil has a violet color in transmitted light .

The name of the element comes from the Greek "argyros" - white, shining, sparkling (Indo-European root arg - to glow, to be bright), hence the Latin - argentum .

Application area

Silver has a wide range of applications due to its unique properties. It is used in many industries .

The metal has the highest electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and resistance to oxidation by oxygen under normal conditions. Therefore, it is used for contacts of electrical products .

Used for the production of batteries. They have a mass electrical capacity, high energy density and are capable of delivering very large currents to the load with low internal resistance .

Silver is used as a catalyst in oxidation reactions .

Silver alloys are used in jewelry. Silver is also used for minting coins and awards .

This metal is also used to cover mirrors with high reflectivity .

Silver permanganate is used in gas masks .

Silver is used as a disinfectant, mainly for water disinfection .

It is also registered as a food additive E174 and is included in some drugs .
