Properties of polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic structural polymer material with high rigidity and strength combined with very high impact resistance, including at high and low temperatures. It has good optical properties, high heat resistance, low water absorption, high electrical resistance and electrical strength, low dielectric losses in a wide frequency range. Products made of polycarbonate retain the stability of properties and dimensions in a wide temperature range: from -100 to +135 ° C.

Polycarbonate dissolves in methylene chloride, dichloroethane. Resistant to aqueous solutions of mineral and organic acids, gasoline, alcohols, oils, but not resistant to alkalis, concentrated acids, organic solvents, chlorine-containing fatty and aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxane, metacresol and tetrahydrofuran. The strength, transparency, stability of properties and dimensions of polycarbonate in a wide temperature range have led to its widespread use in many industries as a structural thermoplastic polymer material instead of non-ferrous metals, alloys and silicate glass. Polycarbonate is processed by all methods known for thermoplastics, however, mainly by extrusion and injection molding at 230-310 ° C. The injection mold is heated to 90-120°C. To prevent degradation at processing temperatures, polycarbonate is pre-dried in vacuum at 115±5°C to a moisture content of not more than 0.02%.
