Cerium(III) oxide is a product of the reduction of cerium(IV) oxide with hydrogen (the process takes place at approximately 1400 °C). It has a gold-yellow color. The oxide is insoluble in water and hydrochloric acid. Dissolves in sulfuric acid.
Used as a catalytic converter to reduce carbon monoxide in exhaust gases. It is used in the process of thermochemical splitting of water. Also, cerium(III) oxide in combination with tin(II) oxide is used for UV lighting.
