It is a brown or black crystalline substance. The oxide is insoluble in practically most solvents, except those with which it interacts. It dissolves slightly in water, and decomposes in an aqueous solution of ammonia to form soluble derivatives .
Used in some silver oxide batteries. Also used as a mild oxidizing agent in organic chemistry .
