The compound is white crystals that do not dissolve in water. It has high melting points (1490-1500; 1521°C) and has several crystalline modifications. Can be reduced with hydrogen to niobium(IV) oxide .
This compound is used as a component of refractories, in the manufacture of ceramics and special glasses, and is also used as an intermediate product in the production of metallic niobium .
