Nickel

Nickel is a chemical element of group VIII of the secondary subgroup with atomic number 28. It got its name from the name of the evil spirit of the mountains of German mythology (cf. German Nickel- mischievous), which threw the mineral arsenic-nickel shine to copper seekers, similar to copper ore.

The simple substance nickel is a ductile, malleable, silver-white transition metal, at ordinary temperatures in air it is covered with a thin film of oxide. Chemically inactive .

Application area

Nickel is the basis of most of the various alloys (because nickel increases the chemical resistance of the alloy) which are characterized by high toughness and are used in the manufacture of strong armor, high-temperature materials for the aerospace industry, etc.

Nickel plating is often used in industry - a nickel coating on the surface of another metal to protect it from corrosion .

Nickel is widely used in the manufacture of various chemical equipment, in shipbuilding, in electrical engineering, in the manufacture of alkaline batteries, etc.

Dispersed nickel is widely used as a catalyst in chemical reactions .

Nickel oxides are used in the production of ferritic materials and as a pigment for glass, glazes and ceramics; oxides and some salts serve as catalysts for various processes .

Nickel is also used in the production of batteries (iron-nickel, nickel-cadmium, nickel-zinc, nickel-hydrogen) .

Nickel is also used in medicine (manufacturing of bracket systems in dentistry and prosthetics) .
