Mishmetal is an alloy of rare earth elements, an intermediate product in the production of pure rare earth metals and their alloys, obtained during the processing of ore. The specific composition is determined by the deposit. Mishmetal is soft and brittle .
Application area
Mischmetals are used as an oxygen absorber in vacuum tubes (getter) - in batteries using metal hydrides - as a pyrophoric material in pyrotechnics - as an additive in the manufacture of steels and other alloys. The best known misch metal is ferrocerium containing approximately 45-50% Ce, 20-25% La, 15% Nd, 10% other rare earth elements and iron. It is used as a pyrophoric composition to produce sparks in lighters, camping tinders and other appliances .
