| Name | Yttrium / Yttrium |
| CAS number | 7440-65-5 |
| Chemical formula | Y |
In group III , a side subgroup at atomic number 39 is the chemical element yttrium .
A simple substance is a light gray metal. It exists in two crystal modifications: &alpha--Y and &beta-- Y , the transition temperature &alpha-&harr-&beta-is 1482°-C .
In air, yttrium is covered with a dense protective oxide film, reacts with mineral acids, acetic acid, and does not react with hydrogen fluoride. When heated, it interacts with non-metals .
Application area
The main application of yttrium is yttrium ceramics, which are resistant to high temperature conditions .
It is used for smelting highly active metals. Also used in the production of heat-resistant and refractory steel-pouring nozzles .
Again, due to its ability to be resistant to high temperatures, yttrium can be used in high temperature conductors .
Yttrium alloys are used in the aerospace, automotive, and nuclear industries .
Based on these alloys, magnetic materials are produced .
Some yttrium compounds are used as phosphors .
Also, yttrium compounds can be used in jewelry as a containment material for control rods of nuclear reactors, for the production of radiopaque coatings, for the production of cathodes for powerful electron guns, etc.
