Salt has the appearance of a gray amorphous substance, refractory and non-volatile. Unstable in air, hygroscopic. Vigorously decomposed by water with evolution of hydrogen. Forms a crystalline hydrate of composition [W 6 Cl 8 ]Cl 4 •2H 2 O.
It is used to obtain metallic tungsten.
