Salt is a crystal, having the form of plates and needles, dark purple in color. Titanium trichloride is a low volatile compound. It dissolves well in water, slowly oxidizes in air. Titanium(III) chloride can form crystalline hydrates and complex compounds (with liquid ammonia) .
It is used as a reagent in organic synthesis and is also a component of the Ziegler-Natta catalyst .
Titanium trichloride can be used to produce high quality titanium metal. It is used as an additive to the electrolyte. Used to reduce nitro compounds in order to obtain high purity amines. Titanium trichloride is also widely used in analytical chemistry .
