It is a yellow crystalline substance that is soluble in water, ethanol, pyridine. It can form crystalline hydrates of the composition SmCl 3 •6H 2 O. Decomposes when heated.
It is used for the production of metallic samarium and its other compounds. Salt is also used in the production of glasses and phosphors.
