Niobium pentachloride is known in two forms, lemon yellow and white (transition point 183 °C). When interacting with water, an acid precipitate of the composition NbO 3 •xH 2 O is released. It also dissolves in concentrated sulfuric and hydrochloric acids to form niobic acid.
This salt is used as a starting material for obtaining pure niobium. In organic chemistry, it is used as a Lewis acid.
