An inorganic compound that is a brilliant pale blue, highly hygroscopic crystals. Anhydrous cobalt dichloride has low volatility. When heated with oxygen, it decomposes to Co 3 O 4 oxide . They are readily soluble in water, ethanol and methanol. It tends to form double salts.
Cobalt dichloride is used as an intermediate for extracting cobalt from poor ores and obtaining other cobalt compounds. Due to the change in color of cobalt chloride hydrates from the water content, it is used for a rough determination of air humidity. Sympathetic inks are also obtained from solutions. Including cobalt chloride is used to produce catalysts, etchant for dyeing fabrics, as a micro-additive in livestock feed .
