Lithium hydroxide is an inorganic compound that is colorless crystals that are highly soluble in water, but almost insoluble in ethanol.
Lithium hydroxide is a strong base, so when working with it, you need to be very careful, avoiding contact with the skin and mucous membranes.
There are two industrial methods for producing lithium hydroxide: chemical (caustification) and electrolysis. In both methods, the sources of lithium are raw materials containing lithium carbonate.
- in the glass, ceramic and radio engineering industries;
- for the preparation of lithium compounds, in particular oleates, stearates and palmitates;
- as a polymerization catalyst;
- in the production of waterproof lubricants;
- as an electrolyte additive for alkaline batteries.
